Keep Your Dog Safe From The Heat
With the weather warming up, it's so important that we take extra precautions to keep our pets safe. I came across a great article about caring for your dog in the desert heat. These are the highlights of the article.
Have a dog as in inside pet, where she can keep cool in her air-conditioned home during hot summer days.
If your dog must be kept outside, there needs to be a dark shady place. Shade from a tree is NOT enough. I also suggest a misting system to reduce the temperature just a bit.
Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean water, in a dish that can not be tipped over.
If your dog likes to swim, access to your swimming pool is a good idea. Just be sure your dog is trained to know where and how to exit the pool (pool steps). Also, remember that a puppy could drown in your pool!
Only walk your dog in the early morning hours, or at least an hour after the sun has gone down for the night.
Dogs get sunburned, so keep them out of the sun, and don't shave them too short.
Do NOT let your dog travel in the back of a pickup bed. They will burn their feet.
Do NOT leave your dog in the car, not even with the windows cracked.
